My first poetry pamphlet.
I started writing these poems after coming out as a lesbian, moving back in with my parents, and beginning the process of divorce. At 37, having spent most of my career writing non-fiction, poetry gave me somewhere to escape the literal while trying to get closer to the truth.
Invisible Skin is a collection of 17 poems about the layers that accumulate when we deny parts of ourselves. I write about shame, people-pleasing, hypervigilance, addiction, survival, and the expectations placed on women as well as queer love, pleasure, and the reality of beginning again.
Inside, you’ll find Glasgow tenements, sunflowers, legally obtained parmesan, a fanny wax, and the consequences of lying down.
Invisible Skin is for anyone who has realised that in trying to survive they have made myself themselves smaller. I hope it reminds you that your true shape is what we need most.
